What you pay for a popular item on top of its price: the exchange rate, the fees Kakobuy lists, the international line, customs and storage. Every figure carries the date we read it.
The exchange rate behind a hot-selling price
Chinese seller listings quote yuan prices. A display conversion is not necessarily the currency or full amount your provider debits. The dated 8 October comparison gives about 8.5% for combined conversion markup and standard service fees, separately from provider handling charges. Compare the actual credited value, debit currency and fee at checkout.
The PayPal handling fee is stated three ways in the help centre: 3.5% plus US$0.30 in help articles 64 and 99; 2.9% plus US$0.30 in the footer-only PayPal article 65; and a checkout screenshot inside article 65 that computes amount times 0.03 plus 0.01. We print all three because none is dated. The captured help page lists no agent handling charge for Alipay/WeChat and an arrival estimate; check current availability, actual fees and credited balance at checkout.
Fee structure: what the help centre lists
Help article 74 gives the formula: total cost equals commodity cost (the selling price plus the seller's freight to the warehouse) plus international freight plus a packaging fee plus optional value-added services. The packaging consumables fee is listed as 8 yuan per parcel. Help article 63 separately says the customs declaration cost for a parcel is generally 8 yuan. The help centre does not say whether these are the same charge, so we list them apart and do not add them up.
Popular listings add two costs of their own: a shortfall if the seller raises the price after you pay (help article 83), and a second domestic shipping fee if the same item comes from two shops. Buying several items from one seller in one order means one domestic fee (help article 75).
Shipping lines and what a quote depends on
The public estimator at kakobuy.com/tools/estimate quotes every line for a destination, weight and goods type. For a 1000 g parcel of ordinary goods to the United States on 10 October 2026 the cheapest line was Cosmetics Air Express at $38.07 (11 to 17 days); the USPS Tax-Free Line was $39.28 (7 to 13 days); EUB, which takes no batteries or perfume, was $39.35 (15 to 25 days). Two UPS duty-free lines were greyed out because they need at least 2000 g.
Three things move a quote: actual versus volumetric weight, the goods type (batteries, liquids and perfume narrow the choice), and the line's own minimum weight. A popular fragrance plus a pair of earbuds is the classic parcel that rules out the cheap lines. The difference between the estimate you pay and the final packed cost is refunded or charged after packing.
Customs and the EU change
A duty-inclusive route describes the service’s tax-handling terms, not an absence of all recipient obligations. The captured agent guidance refers to payment-order evidence; confirm the actual document request and selected line’s current conditions. The June 2026 EU notice describes Kakobuy’s then-stated subsidy arrangement and should not be read as current legal guidance.
The captured article 21 uses repeated items and a 10 kg parcel as examples in its customs discussion. Those examples do not establish a universal commercial-shipment threshold or an inspection probability. Check the actual goods, quantity, destination requirements and selected route before deciding how to pack.
Storage: the clock that starts at stock-in
Stored items stay free for 100 days from the status in storage, with a reminder email on day 90. Abnormal packages get 60 days from signed for. After that, items are treated as abandoned and destroyed (help article 1). Extending costs 10 yuan per order (OG number) per 30 days, with a separately described 30-day cooling-off period, which is not a promised extra month of free normal storage (help article 120, as read on 10 October 2026; the June version of the same article said 20 yuan per 100 days).
Storage is where a popular-item haul quietly costs money: waiting for one sold-out piece to restock while ten others sit on the shelf. Set a date to ship with or without it.
Compare the same parcel
Hold destination, contents, packed dimensions, chargeable weight and service options constant when comparing quotes. A lower number for a different goods type or weight basis does not establish a cheaper route for your parcel.
